About Roof Gutters
Did you know that wooden gutters were used in American architecture as early as the 1700s? These basic gutter installations were often constructed of two longboards fastened lengthwise in a V-shape. The downspouts were also made of wood, typically using hollowed-out logs or four boards fastened together to form a channel.
Over time, as rain gutter systems gained popularity, different materials were used in their construction. Lead, copper, galvanized iron, and aluminum have all been used to make rain gutters.
Gutters are designed to direct damaging rainwater away from your home. A properly installed new gutter system will save you money in the long run and give you and your family the peace of mind you deserve.

Gutter Guards & Covers
Your gutters are an investment ensuring the longevity of your home. Protect that investment with gutter guards. Leaves and other debris can clog your gutters and downspouts, putting your home at risk. An overflow of water may cause serious damage to your roof, siding, foundation, and even the expensive landscaping surrounding your home. Excess water can also lead to costly flooding in the basement. Beyond water damage, debris left in your gutters over time dries out and becomes a fire hazard—a threat to the safety of your family.
Clean gutters are safe gutters, but gutter cleaning can be a messy, time-consuming, and dangerous chore. Gutter covers will reduce—or even eliminate—the need for you to climb a ladder and manually remove debris from your gutter.
We at Eagle Building Solutions provide multiple gutter protection options to meet your needs, as well as your budget. If you are looking for a long-term, low-maintenance gutter guard, ask about our Gutter ProTech® covers available in multiple colors of aluminum and copper. We also offer Gutter Warrior™ and Leaf Relief aluminum gutter covers by Ply Gem. Do you live in an area with light tree coverage? We can install moderately priced aluminum gutter screening and outlet strainers to handle minimal debris accumulation.
Bottle Brush Guards
Inexpensive “bottle brush” guards such as GutterBrush are made of heavy-duty bristles. When inserted inside the gutter, the bristles are supposed to prevent leaves and debris from accumulating. In reality, many users have found that leaves and shingle granules simply build up behind and beneath the projecting bristles or become stuck on the bristles themselves and resulting in a buildup of sludge in the bottom of the gutter, defeating the purpose of installing gutter guards in the first place.
Foam Gutter Guards
Made from porous polyurethane, this guard inserts directly into the gutter and a common brand is GutterStuff. While the foam allows water to flow slowly through the gutter, users report the foam begins to deteriorate and become brittle after only two years of use. The foam also allows shingle granules to pass through and collect at the bottom of the gutter resulting in the same buildup of sludge in the bottom of the gutters.
Perforated Metal Guards
Perforated metal guards like GutterRx fit under the leading edge of the shingles and cover the gutter. This type of cover is effective at keeping out leaves, pods and seeds, and other debris. Some small debris can become stuck in the perforations and may require periodic cleaning of the covers to maintain water flow into the gutter system in heavily wooded areas. This type of cover is a good cost-effective way to minimize maintenance on your gutter system.
Helmeted, Reverse-Curve, or surface tension gutter guards are designed to move rainwater down. They also cause leaves and other debris to drop down to the ground rather than collecting in your gutters. Unfortunately, most of these guards lift up roof shingles if not installed correctly, which could void your roof warranty. They require periodic maintenance to prevent debris from building up in the small openings. You might also have a pest problem if bees or wasps get through the opening and build nests in your gutters. If properly installed and maintained these products do a great job of keeping your gutters free-flowing for many years.
Micro-Mesh Gutter Guards
Super-fine mesh screens like LeafSolution were designed to eliminate the problems with perforated metal covers. Micro mesh gutter guards have tiny holes that are barely visible to the naked eye. These guards, which are typically made of stainless steel, allow water through while keeping debris out. Consumer Reports named these as the best type of gutter protection. As with any gutter cover, they will require periodic cleaning to maintain optimum flow through the mesh. This type of cover is the least likely to allow debris of any kind into the gutter system but costs more than perforated metal covers.
Evaluating These Gutter Guard Options
When you’re comparing your options for these guards, keep the following tips in mind:
- Look for a system with aluminum instead of plastic. Plastic guards can become warped and fall over time.
- Look for guards that will not disturb your shingles or roof.
- Install a guard that offers a no-clog warranty.
- Look for guards that are easy to maintain because every guard needs some maintenance.
- Keep in mind that any type of guard will compromise the ability of water to enter the gutter system resulting in overflows in times of extreme rainfall. This is true for any type of cover.
